How many members are serving at this site? We have one member-Elisabeth Jackson serving at Tuggle Elementary. What is your organizations goal at this site? The goal of BETA is to ensure 200 urban students are proficient in mathematical and scientific concepts by year end. What is something exciting that has happened at this site? Kayla Jackson has been such an asset to Central Park Elementary; she developed a fun way for students to learn, in the fourth and fifth grade classrooms, through math manipulatives, which ultimately caused our STAR data to rise!

Why did you join AmeriCorps? A few years ago I decided that I wanted to dedicate my life to somehow serving others, doing something bigger than myself, [and] that's when I decided to apply for Teach For America. I was introduced to it after I studied abroad, and I knew that it would work out if it was meant to be. What is your favorite part of national service? I think giving back to our country is a way to not only help out our American brothers and sisters, but also remind ourselves what a wonderful place we live in. How many members are serving at this site? We will have 12 AmeriCorps Members facilitating the institute, managing curriculum, and overseeing college volunteers and high school students. What is your organizations goal at this site? CollegeFirst pairs talented college mentors with promising high school students to strengthen foundational concepts in preparation for the rigor of AP coursework in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English Language, and Computer Science. CollegeFirst provides students the opportunity to get a leg up on college and AP curriculum preparation. What is something exciting that has happened at this site? Site Spotlight : Girls Inc. of Central Alabama

How many members serve at your site? We have two members serving at this site, Sara Fortenberry and Torri Knight. What is your organizations goal at this site? Our goal is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. What is something exciting that has happened at this site? We have started a new mentoring program, called Bold Futures, that has allowed us to reach 40 new girls, ages 9-14, within the city of Birmingham. Mentors meet with their mentees twice a week to teach them life skills and character development. The mentees also participate in new activities that foster their creativity and the mentors provide a safe space filled with constant support and fun!

Why did you join AmeriCorps? "I joined AmeriCorps to make a difference in my community and peoples life." What is your favorite part of national service? "I enjoy serving with my team because I know that our service is making a difference." What is your favorite thing to do when you are not serving? Why did you join AmeriCorps? I joined AmeriCorps to be a part of an amazing national-wide organization where I can volunteer and give back to my community. What is your favorite part of national service? In AmeriCorps I’m given the opportunity to make a positive impact on lives of the children in my community school system. AmeriCorps allows me to get hands on experience with students and the classroom setting for when I become an educator. What is your favorite thing to do when you are not serving?
