During the 2016-2017 school, there was one Teach For America teacher and AmeriCorps member working at Oliver Elementary School, Bibi Tillery, who was in her first year teaching. In addition, we have 4 Teach For America and AmeriCorps alumni members working at Oliver Elementary School. Another AmeriCorps affiliated program, Jones Valley Teaching Farm, also places members at this site. What is your organization’s goal at this site?

Why did you join AmeriCorps? "When I first applied to the program it was my hope to help the children I would meet fall in love with reading, as I did at an early age. At that time I didn’t know that the focus of the program had changed to STEM. Science is my passion, but to get through it you need a strong foundation in math. "I'm partnered with an organization addressing poverty and homelessness. My service site deals with a wide range of issues, because housing is a foundation for community and building a healthy community means empowering people who are experiencing homelessness. How many members are serving at this site? We have two members serving at this site. What is your organizations goal at this site? During the summer the AmeriCorps members serve in classrooms on a rotational basis performing interventional activities in reading and math. How many members are serving at this site? We currently have 3 Americorps service members. What is your organizations goal at this site? Our core focus is to improve the livelihood and quality of life in all of the families we serve. \ What is something exciting that has happened at this site? We recently received a grant that will change the lives of 10 families!


Site Spotlight: Martha Gaskins Elementary School
How many members are serving at this site? We have two members serving at Martha Gaskins Elementary. What is your organizations goal at this site? The goal of BETA is to ensure 200 urban students are proficient in mathematical and scientific concepts by year end. What is something exciting that has happened at this site? The students have thoroughly enjoyed practicing math fluency skills with Ms. Harris and all of their scores have increased tremendously.
