Meet Maya Flournoy, TFA Member currently serving with Hudson K-8 School, located in Birmingham, Alabama (Jefferson County). A service site of the Teach for America Alabama AmeriCorps program.

Teach For America finds, develops, and supports equity-oriented leaders to transform education and expand opportunity for all children.

What inspired you to serve as a Teach for America/AmeriCorps member? I decided to serve as a member because I wanted to give back to the community and serve in a meaningful way. The impact that school and my teachers had on my life and my future made me the person that I am today, and I wanted to also positively impact today’s young kids.

What are your plans after Teach for America/AmeriCorps? After Teach for America I plan to go back to school and complete a pre medicine post baccalaureate program that will matriculate me into their respective medical school.

Maya, thank you for your service!

You or someone you know could be the perfect fit for the TFA AmeriCorps program! Learn more.

It's wonderful to read about Maya Flournoy's dedication to giving back to the community, especially her desire to positively impact young kids, just as her own teachers impacted her. Her plan to pursue medicine after TFA shows such a strong commitment to service, and it's inspiring how these different paths can be chained together. What a truly remarkable journey she is embarking on! ✨
