Member Spotlight: Dajour Lewis, Instructional Assistant

Meet Dajour Lewis, serving with the AmeriCorps Instructional Support Team with the Bright Beginnings Pre-K program.

What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? I knew I wanted to gain more experience with children. Little did I know, I was also about to learn exactly how much patience I had.

What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? This year I would like to have an even bigger positive impact on the kids’ lives. Last year I was more focused on following protocols, but now that I am familiar with the rules, I can enjoy serving the community even more.

What will your service focus on for the 2017-18 program year? We will focus on providing support to our economically disadvantaged children in the Pre-K program. We will also assist with demonstrating gains in the schools’ readiness to learn.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps? After AmeriCorps, I plan on applying to dental school. My goal is to become a dentist and come back and offer affordable care to the community and surrounding areas in which I was raised. I also plan to change the stigma on the fear of dentists through pediatric treatment.
