Meet Bryan Houck, SCA Member, currently serving in Mobile, AL, a service site of the AmeriCorps Conservation Corps AmeriCorps Program.
1. What will your service focus on this year?
My service will focus on learning more about prescribed fires and steps to take in certain weather conditions.
2. What inspired you to serve as an AmeriCorps member?
What inspired me is the ability to work outdoors and in a remote setting as well.
3. What advice would you give someone interested in serving with your AmeriCorps State program?
I would highly encourage them to be flexible. There is a lot to do and a lot of knowledge out there. Although you may be interested in one topic, it doesn’t hurt to try it all out.
Thank you for your service, Bryan!

Reading Bryan’s experience makes the whole journey feel real and grounded. Learning prescribed fire in changing conditions sounds both challenging and meaningful. I like how he values flexibility, it reminds me of how I sometimes play basketball legends as a game to relax and adapt in the moment. Different worlds, yet the same mindset of staying open and learning always matters for me personally today.
