Kayla Jackson -Birmingham Engaging in STEM

Why did you join AmeriCorps?

"I always wanted to be a teacher, and I plan to teach chemistry. I saw this as an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students who need help with math and science as well as to test the waters of the career choice I want."

What is your favorite part of national service?

"My favorite part of national service is the "Aha moments" the kids I tutor have. The methods their teacher might be using to teach them specific lessons aren't really connecting, and a new method I use to help them understand the concept finally makes the lesson click in their mind. I love seeing their faces light up as the frustration of not understanding fades away."

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not serving?

"My favorite thing to do when I'm not serving is to really just spend time with my daughter."

What is your favorite snack?

"My favorite snack is CANDY!!!"

What is your favorite soda?

"My favorite soda is Cherry Pepsi Cola."

What are your plans after AmeriCorps?

"After AmeriCorps, I want to teach chemistry, but I would definitely love participating in AmeriCorps as long as possible. Birmingham Engaging in STEM AmeriCorps is an extremely enriching and welcoming AmeriCorps program, and I encourage anyone who is thinking about applying to do so."
