Describe your AmeriCorps program

The Selma AmeriCorps Program, formerly known as Selma Digital Opportunity, was established in the year 2000 and served Selma, Alabama. The primary focus was narrowing the digital divide between the have and the have-nots. Currently, the primary focus is education with an interest in K-12 success targeting the subjects of Reading and Math. During the 2021-2022 Program Year, the program has implemented School Readiness and Healthy Futures performance measures to focus on educational readiness for kindergarten and access to food for citizens of Dallas County.

Number of Members Serving

48

Responsibilities of the Members:

Members primarily provide academic tutoring to at-risk students in Reading and Math in grades third through eighth during and after school. Additionally, members provide mentoring services to students in after-school and summer programs. Also, members will create, implement, and participate in community service projects. Lastly, members will participate and engage in training opportunities as provided by the Selma AmeriCorps Program, the Governor’s Office of Volunteer Services, and AmeriCorps.

What do the members and the program hope to accomplish by the end of the program year?

By the end of the year, 400 students will have shown improved academic performance, and 80 children will have demonstrated gains in school readiness. Additionally, members will support food sorting and distribution efforts to result in 200,000 pounds of food provided to at least 300 families to increase access to food. Members will also leverage 220 volunteers engaged in local community service projects. As a result of participating in these service activities, members will gain educational and life enhancement opportunities while providing meaningful service to the community. Finally, the program hopes to provide the members with a memorable and pleasurable service experience while instilling ethics and increasing civic responsibility.

Thank you for your service!
