Member Spotlight: Karrie Quirin, Mobile BayKeeper AVE member

Meet Karrie Quirin, serving with Mobile Baykeeper as part of the Baykeeper AmeriCorps Volunteer Engagement (Baykeeper AVE).

What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? I feel most accomplished when I am performing service for others, thus the Americorps program immediately stood out to me. The position with Mobile BayKeeper also meets my passion for the environment. Therefore, being able to be a part of both organizations is proving to be the perfect fit!

What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? Although I am already involved in my community, I am hoping to be able to reach out and get to know different demographics that I may not have been able to communicate with outside of this opportunity. On a professional level, I am also excited to grow my public speaking and leadership skills.

What will your service focus on for the 2017-18 program year? Being part of the Volunteer Program, my service will focus on recruiting, managing, and maintaining volunteers. The main times I will be interacting with volunteers will be during clean-ups. During these events, I am looking forward to encouraging participation and educating others about the importance of keeping their local community clean and safe.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps? By the time this program ends, I will be in the middle of completing my Master’s degree in Environmental Studies. After finishing this degree, I intend to go into a career of environmental planning- whether that be an occupation within the National Park’s system or in city planning.

Thank you for your service Karrie!
