Meet Shannon Powell, she serves with the AmeriCorps Instructional Support Team with the Bright Beginnings Pre-K program.
What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? I wanted to be more involved in the community and help children having a challenging time in different subject areas. I also wanted to go into Early Child development. Working with children in AmeriCorps will give me all the experience I need.
What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? I would like to help kids that are having academic trouble in school and help those children that are very shy.
What will your service focus on for the 2017-18 program year? I will serve in the Bright Beginnings Pre-K program to provide direct support to economically disadvantaged children to develop school readiness skills as it relates to social and/or emotional development, literacy skills in one or more domains: phonological awareness book knowledge and appreciation, print awareness and concepts, early writing, and alphabet knowledge.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps? To gain a better understanding of working with diverse groups of children to assist me in making a decision as to whether or not to go into Child Development.
Thank you for your service Shannon!
