The Governor’s Office of Volunteer Services works to increase an ethic of service and volunteerism in the State of Alabama, strengthen the capacity of Alabama’s faith and community-based organizations, and promote collaboration among individuals and organizations striving to meet some of the greatest needs in our state, including education, health care, substance abuse, homelessness, and maintaining a healthy environment.

Alabamians Give Back

Volunteering is a cherished core value in Alabama, reflecting the

community spirit of generosity and support. Alabamians take pride in giving back, whether local charities, schools, or community events, fostering a culture of kindness and collaboration. This commitment to service only strengthens our neighborhoods but also enriches the lives of those who participate.

According to the most recent data from the Volunteering and Civic Life in America Report, here is how Alabamia give back:

  • 808,033 formal volunteers contributed 40,364,563 hours of service through organizations worth an estimated $1.2 billion.

  • 19.9 percent of residents formally volunteered through organizations.

  • 96.7 percent of residents talked to or spent time with friends or family.

  • 47.3 percent of residents informally helped others by exchanging favors with their neighbors.

  • 65.7 percent of residents had a conversation or spent time with their neighbors.

  • 14.7 percent of residents belonged to an organization.

  • 41.5 percent of residents donated $25 or more to charity.
