In September 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the National and Community Trust Act establishing AmeriCorps. Just one year later, more than 20,000 Americans took the first AmeriCorps pledge and were sworn in at the White House and in states across the country.
Thirty years later, more than 9,800 Alabama residents have joined 1.25 million AmeriCorps members and pledged to serve communities large and small, to help others live healthier, safer, smarter, and more resilient lives, and carry that commitment into their careers and personal lives. Those 9,800 people devoted approximately 16 million hours during their AmeriCorps terms and, while enhancing their own skills, earned a combined $32.8 million in education awards to use post-service. Higher education institutions and other organizations in Alabama have received more than $14.5 million in education aware payments since 1994.
During the event we will share stories and photos of past members and programs.
As part of the 30th anniversary activities, we welcome back AmeriCorps Alums and will host a swearing-in commitment to service ceremony.
The event is open to all AmeriCorps Alums and through special invitation. If you would like more information, or have any questions, please contact us at (334) 242-1549 or send an email to info@ServeAlabama.gov.
