Member Spotlight: Lucy Johnson, Mobile Baykeeper AmeriCorps Program
Meet Lucy Johnson, currently serving with the Mobile Baykeeper AmeriCorps program.
1. What motivated you to join AmeriCorps?
I was motivated to join AmeriCorps because I believe in Mobile Baykeeper's mission and goal for clean water, clean air, and healthier communities. As a second-year AmeriCorps member, the sense of community engagement and support to make our oceans a safe place to swim, play and fish for generations to come gives me a sense of joy and accomplishment.
2. What would you like to get out of this service opportunity?
I want to gain more experience with other aspects of the AmeriCorps, Patrol, and the Education program. I want to build on the progress and gain knowledge of my 2020 – 2021 Program year. I want to continue to inform our community of how conducting cleanups, testing water quality, and informing school communities are to the health of Mobile Bay now and for future generations.
3. What will your service focus on for the 2021-2022 program year?
During this program year, my service will focus on improving volunteer one-on-one interactions, determining the most used volunteer signups to maximize volunteer engagement, and growing the bond of our fellow AmeriCorps in Alabama. Using the help of survey results, I want to see what platforms are cultivated volunteers and use that data to connect with future volunteers. As a volunteer engagement member, I want to continue to plan cleanups in a timely and efficient manner and inform our community on the importance of clean water, clean air, and the health of their community.
4. What are your plans after AmeriCorps?
I plan on using the education stipend to complete online courses on animal behavior and wilderness first aid and geology. Also considering enrolling in another AmeriCorps term next fall. Additionally, I am exploring careers in wildlife biologist and National Park Ranger.
Thank you for your service Lucy!
