Member Spotlight: Whitney McCartey, AmeriCorps Instructional Support Team Member

Meet Whitney McCartey, currently serving at McKenzie School, in the AmeriCorps Instructional Support Team.

1. What motivated you to join AmeriCorps? I wanted to take this opportunity to gain professional experience while also being able to give back to the community. This opportunity also gave me the perfect schedule to be able to help the community and work around my schedule as a full-time mother.

2. What would you like to get out of this service opportunity? I am looking forward to this position allowing me to learn more about myself and more about the career path I want to follow. It’s also giving me a chance to make professional connections that can help me in the future after my service with AmeriCorps.

3. What will your service focus on for the 2019-2020 program year? I will be providing direct support to economically disadvantaged children in grades K-2 in order to improve performance in literacy and/or math as measured by pre- and post- standardized tests to demonstrate improved academic performance.

4. What are your plans after AmeriCorps? I plan to further my education but have yet to decide on a definite career path. I’m interested in nursing, teaching, or social work.
