Alabama Hosts Be Ready Day

Huntsville, Alabama -
Governor Riley spoke at Alabama's third annual Be Ready Day in Huntsville, Alabama on September 14, 2006.  Be Ready Day was a statewide event encouraging everyone in Alabama to be prepared for disasters.

"Alabama is one of the most prepared states in the country for both man-made and natural disasters, but government can't do the job alone, Riley stated.  "We each have a personal responsibility to make sure our family and loved ones are prepared for any type of disaster by having and emergency kit and a family disaster plan in place."

Attendees received education and training on ways to prepare for disasters and emergencies, learned of volunteer opportunities in their communities, and had the opportunity to observe first responders demonstrating their preparedness and response capabilities.

Be Ready Day was also the culmination of Be Ready Camp.  Be Ready Camp was a four day camp that trained local sixth graders on how to prepare for disasters.  The highlight of Be Ready Camp was a mock disaster that included real-life emergency scenarios such as first aid, triage, incident command, and water rescue.

In addition to Be Ready Day, Alabama also hosted Be Ready Sunday and launched Be Ready Month and  as part of its statewide preparedness efforts.
