AmeriCorps in Alabama
Alabama currently has nine
AmeriCorps State programs which are located across the state.
The programs are funded by the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based
and Community Initiatives. AmeriCorps, termed the domestic Peace
Corps, is about “Getting Things Done.”
AmeriCorps members engage
in solving problems and meeting a wide variety of needs across
Alabama
and the country. In Alabama, our programs focus on mentoring and
tutoring students of all ages, providing a safe place for
students after school and during the summer, bridging the
digital divide in rural areas, emergency preparedness and
response, preparing taxes for low income individuals, conducting
sight screening for youth, assisting senior citizens with
healthcare decisions, providing support to homeless families and
helping teens make sound decisions in dating relationships.
There is an advantage for the AmeriCorps members as well as the
communities in which they serve. Members of AmeriCorps receive
real-life education and service experience wrapped up into one.
They learn teamwork, effective communication, leadership,
responsibility and more. Members experience the satisfaction of
taking on challenges and seeing positive results.
