Alabama AmeriCorps Members
What
do AmeriCorps members do?
AmeriCorps is about Getting Things Done, and AmeriCorps members will be
engaged in solving problems and meeting a wide variety of needs across
Alabama and America. Here in Alabama for example, AmeriCorps members
tutor "at-risk" youth, assist community members with disabilities and
help bridge the digital divide in rural areas by teaching computer
classes to community members of all ages.
What benefits do members
receive?
People can serve as a part-time or full-time AmeriCorps member.
Full-time AmeriCorps members must serve at least 1,700 hours in an
approved AmeriCorps program for approximately one year. In return, they
receive valuable training and skills, a modest living allowance, health
insurance, childcare (if they qualify), and, upon completing their
service, an Educational Award worth $4,725. The education award is valid
for seven years and can be used to pay off student loans and/or
educational expenses. Part-time AmeriCorps members must serve at least
900 hours of service in an approved AmeriCorps program over one year.
Part-time AmeriCorps members may receive a stipend if the local program
offers one, and will, upon the completion of their service, receive an
education award of $2,363.50. The Social Security Administration (SSA)
has developed work incentives to encourage individuals with disabilities
to attempt and retain employment. While national service is not
employment, the SSI work incentives can be used to offset the impact of
receipt of the living allowance and still retain your SSI benefits
Who can be a member of
AmeriCorps?
Anyone 17 years old or older can be a member of AmeriCorps, from 17 to
117! There are no other limitations, such as income. Different local
programs may, however, have their own individual requirements.
AmeriCorps members are Americans who have made the commitment to serve
their communities and country. AmeriCorps members reflect the diversity
of America in age, ethnicity, education, race, gender and religion.
